Do school-based OTPs really address executive functioning?

Have you ever felt unsure of your role when it comes to addressing executive functioning as a school-based occupational therapy practitioner?  You're not alone.

  • You know you are more than a handwriting therapist.
  • You want to empower student success.
  • You don't know where to begin.

Does that sound about right?

You've probably even asked some colleagues and done some online searches.  If you're here, perhaps you've already arrived at the conclusion that executive functioning deserves your attention (even if it feels like a buzzword).

There's no clear-cut guide that can tell you exactly how to handle executive functioning in schools.  I wish there was.  But you're an OTP - you're not a stranger to the answer "it depends".

It's your nature to use your OT knowledge to holistically look at each student and scenario and make informed decisions.  You just need a framework to equip you to confidently address executive functioning in the school setting.

I'm Jennifer Huff.

I've experienced all the frustrations that come with being a pediatric occupational therapist.  Sometimes it feels like our scope is so broad, and we'll never know enough!

Over the years, I have learned that being an OTP is less about being an expert in every topic, and more about the approach we take in problem solving to facilitate functional skills and activities.

Executive functioning has long been an interest area of mine, and a few years ago I completed coursework to become an Executive Functions Consultant.

As I heard the topic of executive functioning brought up more and more in OT spaces, I couldn't help but notice how ill-equipped many in the OTP community felt in speaking to this area.  I knew I needed to be a part of the solution, so I created this course.

I truly hope you find it beneficial and instructive.  Thank you taking steps to be the best OTP you can be.
